Broken Toys and Broken Hearts
a children's sermon based on Mark 1:21-28
by an anonymous DPSer, edited by Frank Schaefer

Props: Bring a wooden doll or truck that is broken.

Good morning, my little friends. When I was a little girl (boy), sometimes my toys would break and I would take them to my parents crying because my toy was broken. Many times my parents would assure me that we could fix that, and they'd get out the glue, and very carefully fix the toy that was broken." (Do so, if you have the glue to fix the toy.) Ask, "Have you ever had a toy that broke? Could you fix it?

"You know, sometimes we get broken, too. Have you ever been broken? Do you know anyone who's ever had a broken arm, or a broken leg? How do we fix those? Do we use glue?

"Sometimes, we get broken inside, and we're sick, or very, very, sad, and our hearts are broken. How do we fix broken hearts and sick bodies?

"Just like we go to our parents with our broken toys, we can go to God with our broken hearts and bodies. God will fix them. They may not be fixed quite the same as they were before they were broken, but they will be fixed.

In our Gospel story today we read about an 11-year-old girl whom Jesus healed . . .[elaborate].

"And one day, God will make us all even better than new, fixing all the broken parts and taking all the hurt away."

Let us pray: "Dear God, thank you for loving us so much. This morning, we pray that you will heal our hearts and we pray that you will heal those who are ill in their body.  Thank you for your healing power which Jesus showed toward the little girl and so many others. Thank you for wanting all of us to be whole and happy.  Watch over us we pray. Amen."

Faith in Jesus Can Heal You
a children's sermon based on Mark 1:21-28
by Rev. Frank Schaefer

props: a box with over-the-counter medicine (e.g. Tylenol, Nyquil, Tums, etc.)

Greetings, my little friends; today I want to tell you a remarkable story of faith.

In our lesson today, Jesus heals a woman from an illness.  This woman had had this illness for a long time, and none of the doctors could do anything for her.

I brought a few samples of medicine that we use today.  Do any of you recognize any of these?  Hold up the Tums, Tylenol,  Nyquil, etc and ask the kids if they recognize them and what they are used for.

You know this woman had tried a lot of different medications for her illness, and she had spent probably all her money on doctors and medications like these.   How do you think she felt?

But then one day she heard about Jesus, who healed people, just by touching them.  At that point she was pretty desperate and willing to try anything. She decided to go and find Jesus.  Would you have done that?

When she finally found Jesus, she was really discouraged, because she couldn't even get close to him, let alone speak to him. There were so many people surrounding him and no one would let her through.

But the woman was not only determined, but she was smart, too.  She went ahead of where Jesus was going and when Jesus passed by her, she touched him.   Do you know why?  She figured, if Jesus could heal people by touching them, then it should work the other way around, too.  She believed that, if she touched Jesus, then she would be healed.  Do you think her plan worked?

Yes, you are right.  As soon as the woman touched Jesus, her bleeding stopped and she was healed.  Isn't that amazing?  As soon as she touched Jesus, he knew that someone had been healed and he asked his disciples: "who touched me?"

The disciples said: "Lord, there are dozens of people here that have been touching you."  But Jesus said" "no, someone touched me who had faith for healing."  And he looked at the woman and the woman said: "it was me.  As soon as I touched you, Lord, I was healed.  Thank you so much, Lord."

And Jesus looked at her and said: "woman, your faith has healed you."  Her plan worked out, because she had faith.  Faith in Jesus. And she was determined that she was going to get close to Jesus.

What do you think, can Jesus still heal us today if we have faith in him?     Yes, you're absolutely right?  How can we show our faith in Jesus to heal us?  How can we get close to Jesus, today?  Right again, by prayer.

There is no telling what God can do, if we ask him in prayer to touch us if we really mean what we pray. God's word also says that nothing is impossible with God!   So, don't forget to pray for those who are ill, because if we pray with faith, God will hear our prayers.
