Scripture Text (NRSV)

Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:7-9

4:14 Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession.

4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin.

4:16 Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

5:7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.

5:8 Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered;

5:9 and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

"Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we nay receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need."

The woman sit in her side of the bed with the little baby in her arms. With tears she begin to give him the last four ounces of milk that they gave her in the hospital where she delivered two days ago. She share her little room with her three other kids, and now the baby... There was no husband to ask for help. The father of the first three kids was recently deported to his country. Suddenly she remembered the latino woman she found an afternoon in the street, she seemed to be so kind and she said to call her if she needed anything for the baby. She began to look for that business card until she found it. But what if the woman does not remember her? What if she can not help her? She lowered her eyes and prayed once more for a miracle of love. She called the numbered and the women answered. An hour later, she was knocking at her door. She brought diapers and formula for the baby. Also some soap and wipes to clean the little newborn. Because she was bilingual, she offered to call her nurse at the Health Deparment to let them know the baby was born. Through the phone whe made an appointment for WIC, for the baby two weeks check up and the mothers 6 weeks Gyn appointment. Then she offered a prayer for both. After she left, the woman look at her little baby and smile trough her tears. There was mercy and help for the times of need. There was hope... yes, there was hope.

This year I have been doing a sermon series based on the Prayers of Jesus, using info from a Bible Study book "Jesus and Prayer" by Abena Safiyah Fosua. The Good Friday service will be the last in that series, titled: Prayers from the Cross.
