Scripture: Proverbs
3:13 – “Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding.”
As the school year begins, students
sharpen pencils, open fresh notebooks, and step into new classrooms filled
with possibility. But for Christians, this season is more than
academic—it’s sacred. Proverbs 3:13 reminds us that wisdom and
understanding are not just useful—they are blessings. And like all
blessings, they originate with God.
Wisdom Begins with God
Education is often seen as a ladder to
success, but Scripture teaches us that true wisdom begins with reverence
for the Lord. Proverbs 2:6 says, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his
mouth come knowledge and understanding.” This means every lesson
learned, every insight gained, is a gift from the Creator. Whether it's
algebra or art history, biology or biblical studies—God is the source
behind it all.
Education Is a Gift
We live in a time and place where
educational opportunities abound. Schools, libraries, online courses,
mentors—these are not to be taken for granted. They are blessings. And as
stewards of these gifts, we are called to make the most of them. To study
diligently, ask questions, and grow intellectually is to honor the One who
gave us minds capable of learning.
Beyond Career and Wealth
But let’s be clear: the goal of education
for a follower of Christ is not merely to land a high-paying job or
accumulate wealth. Those may be byproducts, but they are not the purpose.
The true aim is transformation. Education helps us grow into people who
reflect Christ—people who serve, share, and uplift others.
Jesus didn’t come to be served, but to
serve. And so, our learning should lead us to humility, compassion, and
action. A Christian student doesn’t just ask, “How can I succeed?” but
also, “How can I help?” Whether it’s tutoring a struggling classmate,
volunteering in the community, or simply being a kind presence in a
stressful environment—education equips us to make the world better.
A Call to Students
So as you return to school, remember this:
- Seek wisdom, not just grades.
- Pursue understanding, not just
achievement.
- Let your education shape your
character, not just your résumé.
And above all, let your learning be an act
of worship—a way of honoring the God who gave you the ability to grow.
